Cats and SMA

Today I was researching a cat breed, Maine Coon, because Jason and I both love them and have considered getting one several times. I think getting a cat from a shelter is by far the best thing to do, but I figure if I have 3 of those already, maybe it is okay for me to get a pure bred cat? They are not cheap, so I decided to look over possible health problems they might have; to my surprise, they can have SMA! I had no idea that cats could have it too! I probably won't ever get one now. I figure we have already dealt with SMA once in our lives and that is enough. I'm glad I'm such a Google nut sometimes.

Holy Cow - I had no idea.

Not long after Jeffrey died, we acquired a kitten who obviously needed a family of suckers. We were on the porch a few months later, and Sami started acting REALLY weird, like she had a neurological problem. I couldn't believe it. She acted like she couldn't get up, dragging herself around and just looking 'off.'

I took her to the vet, who laughed. Seems Sami was in heat....

I love the Maine Coons, too, tho - they're gorgeous!

Oh gracious...another cat... just kidding Rita - if you want to talk about someone that loved cats...my grandmother was crazy over them! I think she would take everyone you would give her.

LOL @ Sami. I imagine the vet found that pretty funny.

We have loved Maine Coons for years now and even picked out one and named him. He sold pretty fast though. I don't think I can get one now knowing it could have SMA. That made me really sad today. I've had more than enough dealings with SMA to last me for a very long time.

I always planned on being the crazy cat lady. I'm not sure where Jason came in, but I guess he can have a space in the house with my cats! :)
